Lakeside, Michigan

The Chikaming tribe of Native Americans once dominated this area of Harbor Country. In the late 19th century, Chicagoans discovered Lakeside as a summer retreat; famous among them Jane Addams. The early tents in which the residents, many from University of Chicago, spent their summers have been replaced by some of the most splendid homes in Harbor Country.

The Michigan Dunes and surrounding terrain comprise a fragile eco-system. Using inspired design incorporating the best of this area's native plants, The Country Gardener will achieve a beautiful low -maintenance garden for you.

Wind and erosion are two major factors that must be considered when planting in this lake front community. Heavy winds and storms, intensified by the lake, continuously shift and alter the sandy soil. Professional landscaping techniques such as terracing should be implemented to combat erosion, effectively keeping your gardens in place.
